Calle delle Rasse has been thus named since the medieval age when the first workshops were opened for the manufacture of woollen cloth, “ rassa”,( named after the Serbian town Raska) which was used to cover the Felzi (cabins) of the famous gondolas.
Riva degli Schiavoni takes its name from the large number of citizens from Dalmatia, who were known as Schiavoni in Venice and their Scuola, San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, which was the site of their guild, is nearby and is famous for its cycle of paintings by Vettore Carpaccio, which is still intact to this day.
